Walter “Spud” Johnson, a New Mexico editor, essayist and poet bought the house that is now called Laughing Horse in the late 1920s. He frequently entertained at his humble adobe on Paseo del Pueblo Norte the likes of Witter Bynner, Mable Dodge Lujan, D.H. Lawrence, Upton Sinclair and Georgia O’Keefe. The room reserved for the Artist-in-Residence is named the Georgia O’Keefe room in honor of the famous artist’s numerous stays at the house. This historic adobe a private home of Spud Johnson, publisher of the Laughing Horse magazine (1924 to 1939) and friend of DH Lawrence, Mabel Dodge, Dorothy Brett, and in later years, Georgia O'Keefe.
