HISTORIC BUILDING – It is estimated that the original building was constructed in the early 1820’s. The nearby Kit Carson House (now a museum) was built around 1825. The original house belonged to Stephen R. Lee, who came to Taos with the first Territorial Governor, Charles Bent. Both Lee and Bent were killed in the Pueblo Revolt of 1847. Alouishes Liebert acquired the house (but not directly from Lee; apparently there was an owner between Lee and Liebert), and subsequently left it to his two sons. The east side of the house belonged to one son, and the west to the other.
The east side of the original building now houses a store called “Horsefeathers.” The adobe wall at the rear of that store that is six feet thick, and was built that way for defense. The occupants could walk on top of the wall for surveillance of the surrounding land. The extra-think wall was removed from the west side of the house at some time, for unknown reasons.
The front of the building has a classic wooden walkway built up from street level, and covered by a roof.
The Sanchez family acquired the west side of the original building in 1980. It had been added on to, and the newer part is not true adobe. The total property offered for sale is 5,049 square feet, and is currently divided into two galleries:
the west side is 1,362 square feet, with an additional 1,098 sq. ft. of basement space, including a walk-in safe (At one time, it housed a jewelry operation.)
the east side is 3,687 square feet, with an additional 1,331 sq. ft. of basement space. The east side is L-shaped, so that the rear part of it wraps behind the smaller west-side space. It has an entrance from Barela Lane.
